Tata Steel's Europe Arm Cut Business Ties with Russia

Tata Steel noted that the coal imports from Russia are ‘miniscule’ and that the halt will not affect the steel plant operations in the region.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading Indian steelmaker Tata Steel announced that its European arm has stopped doing business with Russia, in the wake of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Announcing the decision, the company spokesperson noted that Tata Steel does not have any operations or employees in Russia. The company has taken a conscious decision to stop doing any business with that country. The company is said to import coal from Russia for its steelmaking process. Tata Steel noted that the coal imports from Russia are ‘miniscule’ and that the halt will not affect the steel plant operations in the region.

In a statement issued yesterday, the steelmaker’s European arm said that all of its steel manufacturing sites in India, the UK and the Netherlands have sourced alternative sources for supply of raw materials, as part of efforts to end their dependence on Russia. Meantime, the company’s Indian division has until now not issued any statement about doing business with Russia.

A senior Tata Steel Executive, who declined to be named, said that the European arm will end its business ties with Russia and its business in UK and Netherlands will be part of the decision.

Last week, the tech giant Infosys had decided to drop out of business with Russia, over invasion of Ukraine.
