Coca-Cola Partners with Nigerian Government to Launch Plastics Recycling Programme
The project is expected to organize informal sector players and empower them.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Coca-Cola Foundation has partnered with the Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre (NCIC) to launch a new plastics recycling programme in the country. The initiative titled “Cycle Plast Project” targets to boost plastic waste collection and recycling by ensuring increased participation by the informal sector. The formal launch ceremony took place in Abuja.
The programme segments the country into six zones. Each zone will have 165 waste operators, thus resulting in 990 operators across all the zones. Initially, the programme aims at a monthly target of 743 tons across zones, this resulting in a total of 8,910 tons during the year. At the end of each month, each project location is required to deliver at least 124 tons. Also, each waste picker must deliver approximately 0.75 tons.

The ultimate aim is to create a plastic waste free environment by unlocking the immense opportunities across the value chain.
Incidentally, the recent report published by the World Population Review had identified Nigeria as the 7th largest plastic waste generating country in the world. Also, informal sector accounts for nearly 70% of the total plastic collection.
