Extrupet to Double South African PET Bottle Recycling Capacity

The proposed facility will be the company’s fourth recycled PET (rPET) facility in South Africa.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Extrupet- the leading South African recycling company announced that the new facility is expected to double its recycling capacity. In addition, it will also result in creation of multiple new jobs in the PET bottle collection and recycling industry in the country.

The proposed facility will be the company’s fourth recycled PET (rPET) facility in South Africa. The initial phase of the expansion is estimated to cost around $20.5 million and is expected to be completed in 2023. It will boost the company’s recycling capacity by 33,000 tonnes per year, thereby doubling its food-grade operations capacity to over 60,000 tonnes per year. Also, the investment will significantly increase its capacity from the current 5 million PET bottles per day.

Chandru Wadhwani, Joint Managing Director at Extrupet noted that the leaning towards more environment-friendly options, by both retailers and consumers, has resulted in increased demand for food-grade recycling. Currently, only 60% of the country’s plastic bottles are recycled. With the additional capacity, Extrupet will be able to accommodate more of South Africa’s plastic waste, he added.
