AISI: U.S. Steel Imports Surged Significantly in 2021

The Dec ’21 imports of tin plates witnessed notable surge, rising by 51% from the prior month.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The preliminary Census Bureau data suggests that total U.S. steel imports totalled 2.885 million net tons in the month of December last year. This is marginally down compared with November 2021 final data, reported the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The monthly finished steel imports were down by 4.0% at 2.255 million net tons.

The cumulative total and finished steel imports during the entire year 2021 were 31.476 million net tons and 22.770 million net tons respectively. The total and finished steel imports surged higher by 43.0% and 41.0% respectively, over the previous year. The finished steel market share stood at 24% in December 2021 and 21% over the entire year.

The Dec ’21 imports of tin plates witnessed notable surge, rising by 51% from the prior month. The other key finished steel products to see rise in import volumes were standard pipes and line pipes, whose import volumes were up by 30% and 26% respectively. Also mechanical tubings imports surged 21% from November.

The key steel products to record significant jump in imports in 2021, compared with 2020, were hot rolled sheets and plates in coils, which posted 89% and 75% surge respectively. Sheets and strip all other metallic coatings and oil country goods too were up by 69% and 67% respectively.
