Cleveland-Cliffs to Idle Indiana Harbour #7 Blast Furnace
The employees allocated to the idled furnace will be reassigned to other position within Indiana Harbour Works.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. announced that it will indefinitely idle its Indiana Harbour Blast Furnance No.4. The furnace is expected to stop production within the next two months. This will reduce the number of operational blast furnaces in the company’s footprint from 8 to 7. The furnace has an annual production capacity of 2.1 million net tons.
The idling follows successful implementation of operational improvements such as addition of significant amounts of HBI and the maximization of scrap usage in BOFs. The employees allocated to the idled furnace will be reassigned to other position within Indiana Harbour Works.
The works at its two steel shops, the hot strip mill and all of its finishing facilities in Indiana Harbour Works as well as the nearby Riverdale Works will continue to operate normally. Also, all downstream operations including Riverdale Works will be supplied exclusively by its high productivity No.7 blast furnace. The idling is not expected to result in any change to full-year 2022 steel shipment volumes.
Lourenco Goncalves, Chairman, President and CEO, Cleveland-Cliffs said that the move will help improve its carbon footprint and maximize productivity at No.7 blast furnace.
