Algoma Steel Signed Contract to Boost Transition to EAF Steelmaking
The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Algoma Steel Group Inc. announced that it has awarded contract to GE Gas Power for an upgrade to the company’s natural gas combined cycle power plant. The contract comprises installation of two gas turbine packages. The upgrade is expected to help the leading producer of hot and cold rolled sheet and plate products to boost the initial phase of its transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.
As per the terms of the contract, GE will provide two LM6000 aero derivative gas turbines with complete control systems, in addition to a new control system for the existing GE steam turbine. Also, GE will also complete a full rewind on the No. 2 Generator. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023. The refurbished cogeneration facility will have capacity to generate 110MV of electricity.
Michael McQuade, Chief Executive Officer, Algoma Steel noted that the company is pleased to partner with industry leader General Electric on upgrading its internal electricity generation capacity, thereby providing big boost to its efforts to transform to EAF steelmaking and green steel products. The company will engage local contractors from Sault Ste. Marie and area to support the installation of the equipment, he added.
Eric Gray, CEO of GE Gas Power for the Americas said that the company is proud to support Algoma in their energy transition program.
