worldsteel Urges Industry to Focus on Safety, Climate Action and Skills

The construction sector, considered as the largest steel consuming sector, is expected to continue resilient in 2022 as well.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): In his New Year Meassage, Edwin Basson, Director General, World Steel Association (worldsteel) called upon the industry to focus on safety, climate action and skills in its journey forward.

The report noted that the previous year witnessed stronger than originally expected recovery in steel demand. Based on the positive market trend, the association had recently predicted that steel demand will see marginal surge by 2.2% in 2022 to total 1,896.4 Mt. The construction sector, considered as the largest steel consuming sector, is expected to continue resilient in 2022 as well.

One of the top priorities for the steel industry in 2021 has been safety, which is reflected in notable downward trend in fatality as well as lost time injury frequency rate indicators. The association is currently working on a detailed guidance on creating and sustaining a safety culture, which is expected to be released during Q1 this year.

The commitments announced during the Glasgow COP26 meeting during late-2021 targets to deliver ‘near-zero emission steel’, which is projected to be the preferred market choice by 2030. Also, the industry is likely to benefit from steeluniversity education and training initiative, which offers steel-related training to organizations.
