Las Bambas Copper Mine to Soon Restart Production

It has been agreed to discuss these issues during the review meeting scheduled to be held in mid-January this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): MMG Ltd announced that it will restart operations at Las Bambas copper mine in Peru, following an agreement reached with the Peruvian community. The road blockade by the community had resulted in suspension of operations at the mine for nearly a month now. The restart process is expected to take almost 6 days, the company press release said.

According to Edgardo Orderique, Operations Manager, Las Bambas, the company is in the process of serving all necessary notices to resume mine operations. The entire cycle is expected to take at least five to six days. Everybody has agreed to reach a sustainable deal which will enable the company to restart operations, he added.

It must be noted that t was reached during a meeting held Thursday, organized by the Peruvian government. The Prime Minister had visited the site and held meetings with local residents and company management.

Meantime, there is no clarity on how the government plans to address the main concern of the community. The main demand from Chumbivilcas was hiring of local residents as drivers of copper trucks in addition to giving them cash contributions. It has been agreed to discuss these issues during the review meeting scheduled to be held in mid-January this year.

Las Bambas is one of Peru’s largest copper mines. It contains significant mineral resources and ore reserves of copper with an estimated mine life of at least 20 years.
