SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) announced that it has introduced new single window electronic system to simplify scrap metal export process. At the same time, the agency announced various measures aimed at strengthening scrap metal trade.

According to Andre Williams, Chief information officer and project manager for the Jamaica Single Window for Trade (JSWIFT) Project, exporters previously had to get approval from the Trade Board Limited (TBL) on the manually filled form, before submitting it to Customs. The above process used to take around two to three days for completion.

However, the online process using the single-window application system simplifies the entire process, wherein applications can be submitted online. The ratification is done online, after which the applicants could download the approved export permit. The whole process takes maximum of two hours, Williams noted.

In addition, the agency has beefed up inspection conducted by various agencies, so as to ensure that scrap metal businesses operate legitimately. Also, additional security measures have been introduced to ensure that the trade is properly regulated. Hereafter, manual applications would not be accepted and all scrap metal exporters need to register online through the JSWIFT portal.
