RUSAL Opened New Low-Carbon Aluminum Smelter in Siberia
The smelter is being built at a capital investment of around $1.70 million.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Rusal- the Russia-headquartered global aluminum producer announced that it has opened the first phase of its low-carbon aluminum smelter facility in Taishet, Siberia.
According to company press release, the Taishet Aluminum Smelter (TaAZ) operates on clean energy from Siberian hydroelectric power plants. Alongside, the modern gas cleaning equipment and the closed water circulation system at the smelter helps to reduce the environmental impacts substantially. The carbon dioxide emissions from the plant will be one of the lowest in the industry, it noted. The pre-operation verifications and testing are under progress, the company said.
The smelter is being built at a capital investment of around $1.70 million. Upon full operations, it is expected to have a production capacity of 428.5 thousand tons of low-carbon aluminum during the initial phase. The smelter facility is expected to create around 1,000 jobs in the region, thus playing a key role in boosting the social and economic development of the region and overall development of local communities.
Around one-fourth of the total production will serve the domestic Russian market, especially the extrusion and rolled products segments.
