U.S. Steel Import Permits Surged Significantly in November

The steel imports totalled 29.239 million net tons during the first eleven months of 2021.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that steel import permit applications for the month of November this year totalled 2.678 million net tons. The figures, based on Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) by the U.S Commerce Department, suggest 3.2% surge from permit tons of 2.594 million net tons recorded in the prior month.

The import tonnage for finished steel totalled 2.304 million net tons in November this year, marginally down by 2.2%, compared to final imports total of 2.356 million net tons in October. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 25% in November, said AISI.

The steel imports totalled 29.239 million net tons during the first eleven months of 2021. This is inclusive of November SIMA permits and October final imports. Meantime, the finished steel imports totalled 21.347 million net tons during Jan-Nov ’21. The total and finished steel imports surged higher by 42.5% and 44.2% respectively.

The finished steel import with largest increase in November permits, compared to October final imports, includes black plates and heavy structural shapes, which were up by 82% and 53% respectively. Hot rolled sheets and plates in coils registered significant year-to-date increases, compared to the same period in 2021.
