AISI Indicated Notable Dip in Steel Import Permits
The import permits for structural pipe and tubing and stainless pipe and tubing too were up by 29% and 15% respectively.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates substantial decline in steel import permit applications during the month of October in 2021.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.396 million net tons in October this year. This is significantly down by approximately 18.8% when matched with 2.950 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with preliminary imports in September this year of 3.237 million net tons, the October 2021 steel import permit tonnage was down significantly by 26%, AISI data said.

In October, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.998 million net tons, down 19.1% from the preliminary imports total of 2.469 million net tons in September. Black plates reported largest increase in October permits over the prior month, surging higher by 30%. The import permits for structural pipe and tubing and stainless pipe and tubing too were up by 29% and 15% respectively.
For the initial ten-month period this year, the total and finished steel imports stood at 26.202 million net tons and 18.682 million net tons respectively.
In October, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial ten-month period of the year were South Korea, Japan and Turkey.
