U.S. Steel Fairfield Works Cited as the Top Choice for its Mini Mill Expansion
The furnace at the Fairfield Works makes it a top location for the mini mill.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based integrated steelmaker United States Steel (U.S. Steel) Corporation considers Fairfield Works in Alabama as its top choice for the proposed $3 million mini mill expansion plan. It is being considered as one among the two locations at the top of the list of preferred sites, the other being the Big River Steel mini mill in Arkansas.
The company press release noted that the construction of the new mini mill is part of the company’s objective to produce sustainable steel products by achieving reduced global greenhouse gas emissions. The mini mill will combine two electric arc furnaces with differentiated steelmaking and finishing technology, whose GHG emissions will be significantly lower when compared to the traditional integrated steelmaking process. The furnace at the Fairfield Works makes it a top location for the mini mill.
