JSW Steel Targets to Reduce Dependency on Steel Imports
The coking coal and other mineral reserves in the country are concentrated in a certain part in the north, with most of them having habitation on top.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): JSW Steel, along with other leading steelmakers in the country met the Union Steel Minister, in a review meeting held to take stock of the key concerns of the steel sector in the country. The meeting discussed several key steps required to take the industry forward.
Sajjan Jindal, Chairman, JSW Group, speaking to media after the meeting, shared the view that the country must be self-reliant on all steel capacities, technologies and grades. In addition to common steel products, the company also specializes in production of various grades of specialty steel products, aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imported steel, he added.

The coking coal and other mineral reserves in the country are concentrated in a certain part in the north, with most of them having habitation on top. The development of these mines needs relocation of people, which is a complex task ahead of the government. However, development of these mines would make the country self-reliant in terms of mineral requirement, Jindal said.
The government has been promoting clean technologies like coal gasification. The auction of more coal mines will lead to reduced imports of coking coal.
