JSW Steel to Launch Digitally-Connected Smart Steel Plants

The Vijayanagar facility will be the first smart factory be become operational, followed by Dolvi and Salem.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker JSW Steel announced that it will launch a network of digitally-connected smart steel factories in India over the next three financial years. The company will employ latest technologies including enhanced AI, machine learning and robotics as well as cloud-based techniques.

The company has identified over 200 projects to boost efficiencies at various facilities. It has decided to execute around 100 digital projects at its Vijayanagar, Karnataka plant, over 90 projects at Dolvi, Maharashtra and nearly 10 projects at its Salem, Tamil Nadu facility. The Vijayanagar facility will be the first smart factory be become operational, followed by Dolvi and Salem.

The digital initiative aims at complete transformation of operations, starting from preparation of raw materials, stocking of goods at warehouse and the final delivery to customers. The fully automated warehouses will be entirely managed by robots, said Siddharth Patel, Head of Digital Centre of Excellence, JSW Group.

The company had launched a pilot initiative in 2017 through the implementation of the Athena project, which helped in digitizing procurement, logistics and project management functions. This had resulted in improvement in EBITDA by over INR 1,200 crore.
