Smurfit Kappa Announced Major Capacity Expansion at Mexican Facility

The proposed $22 million investment will expand the plant’s capacity, capabilities and product offerings to local customers.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa announced its decision to invest in major expansion at its Culiacan corrugated facility in North-West Mexican region. The proposed $22 million investment will expand the plant’s capacity, capabilities and product offerings to local customers.

According to company press release, the investment will modernize the facility, with the installation of high-tech state-of-the-art equipment, including a new corrugator and an automatic Rotary Die Cutter machine, which will be fully operational by the end of the current year. The investment will see construction of a new building of nearly 10,900 square metres.

The investment will equip the Culiacan plant to meet the fast-growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions from agriculture and fresh produce consumers. The facility will produce sustainable corrugated boxes with moisture barrier, by making use of reduced amount of paper.

Jorge Angel, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Mexico commented that the investment will reinforce Culiacan plant’s position as the leading employer of the region. The requirement of new operational and administrative roles will expand the plant’s workforce to over 300 employees, he added.
