Topmost Copper Mining Companies in 2020
The BHP Group output edged lower by 5.46% year-on-year, whereas Glencore reported 5.15% surge in output over the previous year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The phenomenal surge in copper prices boosted the output by miners during the previous year. Despite impacts due to Covid-19-related restrictions, the global copper mine output surpassed the 20 million tonne milestone in 2020. The top ten mining companies accounted for more than 50% of the world’s total output.
According to data provided by MiningIntelligence, Santiago, Chile-headquartered Codelco emerged as the topmost copper producer during the previous year. The output by the company totalled 1,727.50 kt, marginally higher by 1.25% over the previous year. In second place was BHP Group with 1,188.50 kt. The third largest copper producer was Glencore, whose production totalled 1,182.30 kt. The BHP Group output edged lower by 5.46% year-on-year, whereas Glencore reported 5.15% surge in output over the previous year.
The other copper producers in the top ten list, along with their output in kt are as follows: Freeport-McMoRan (1,070.50), Southern Copper (1,001.80), First Quantum Minerals (719.20), KGHM Polska Meidz (541.50), Antofagasta (492.10), Rio Tinto (486.80) and Anglo American (462.40).
First Quantum Minerals reported the biggest year-on-year jump in production, rising by 11.31%. The key contributors to this surge in output were Sentinel mine in Zambia and Cobre mine in Panama.
