Fresh Research Report Released on Carbon Emissions at Gold Mines

According to the report, global gold output recorded marginal decline by 5% in 2020, compared with the year before that.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): S&P Global Market Intelligence announced publication of a new research report on emissions of greenhouse gas emissions from gold mines. The report, compiled after reviewing the sustainability reports of around 90 leading gold mines across the world, states that recent lockdown has had no impact on emissions from gold mines during the previous year.

According to the report, global gold output recorded marginal decline by 5% in 2020, compared with the year before that. The reduced output was mainly on account of restrictions on account of Covid-19 pandemic spread. The cumulative output from primary gold mines witnessed only a nominal decline by 1% from 2019.

The throughput from these mines too was down in 2020 by around 1% to 840 Mt of ores processed, compared to 847 Mt in 2019, the report said. Meantime, the emissions from these mines increased marginally by 1% from 27.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2019 to 27.6 Mt in 2020. The emissions intensity averaged at 0.697 tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent per ounce of gold produced.

Also, open pit mines exhibited higher emissions intensity on per ounce of gold produced, but a lower intensity on the basis of lower intensity on per tonne of ore processed.
