30% of Mined Gold Output in 2020 Came From 3 Countries

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The statistics published by USGS and Finbold suggest that global gold mine production totalled 3,241 tonnes during the entire previous year. China topped the list, followed by Australia and Russia. The top three gold producers accounted for nearly one-third of total gold production during the year. The total mined gold in 2020 was slightly lower by 3%, compared to 3,300 tonnes in 2019.

China emerged as the biggest gold producer, with an output of 380 tonnes. The country accounted for 11.7% of the global output. The mining activities in the country resumed after pandemic induced lockdowns. The production was boosted by buoyant domestic demand for gold jewellery. In fact, China accounted for approximately 30% of the global gold jewellery demand during the past year.

Meantime, the production by Australia and Russia totalled 320 tonnes and 300 tonnes respectively. The U.S. gold mine output stood at 190 tonnes in 2020. The mines in Nevada contributed majority of U.S. production. Also, Barrick Gold accounted for nearly 45% of the total U.S. output.

The other countries to feature in the top 10 list along with their output in tonnes are as follows: Canada (170), Ghana (140), Indonesia (130), Peru (120), Kazakhstan (100) and Mexico (100).
