Domestic Steel to Play Major Role in Transition to EVs
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) welcomed the executive order on electric vehicle (EV) targets.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) welcomed the executive order on electric vehicle (EV) targets, which is expected to be signed by President Joe Biden today.
In a statement, Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO, AISI noted that the Institute welcomes the executive order that proposes to have half of all new vehicle sales to be zero-emissions vehicles by 2030. This ambitious goal will add further momentum to the transformation of the auto sector in the country, he added.
The statement said that the American steel industry remains ready to support the automakers in reaching the targets by offering innovative, high-strength steels that combine lighter weight and increased strength. The advanced grades of steel will delivered optimized space, which in turn will allow for packaging of more batteries. This will result in enhancing the range possible on single charge. The use of American made steel will be key in the transition to EVs, it added.
The executive order imposes tougher fuel-efficiency standards on auto makers and challenges them to drastically ramp up sales of electric vehicles by 2030. It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
