U.S. Steel Import Permits Declined Substantially

Sheet and strip all other metallic coatings reported largest increase in July permits over the prior month, surging higher by 39%.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals substantial decline in steel import permit applications in the month of July this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.786 million net tons in July 2021. This is significantly down by approximately 8.2% when matched with 3.036 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with June 2021 preliminary imports of 2.897 million net tons, the July 2021 steel import permit tonnage was down by 3.8%, AISI data said.

In July this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.879 million net tons, down by 6.9% from the preliminary imports total of 2.018 million net tons in June this year.

Sheet and strip all other metallic coatings reported largest increase in July permits over the prior month, surging higher by 39%. The import permits for mechanical tubing and galvanized hot dipped sheets and strip were up by 29% and 19% respectively.

In July 2021, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea. The largest offshore suppliers through the first seven months of the current year were South Korea, Japan and Turkey.

The total and finished steel imports during the first seven months of the year totalled 17.474 million net tons and 11.874 million net tons respectively. The product to witness highest year-to-date increase over the corresponding period in 2020 was hot rolled sheet, which stood higher by 66%.
