World Scrap Imports Recaptured Notable Momentum

The South Korean scrap imports too recorded 10.8% growth over the previous year to total around 378,000 tons.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest scrap trade statistics indicate that Vietnam’s scrap imports totalled 620,000 tons in May this year. The imports were up significantly by 82.35% over the same month a year before. The largest source of imports was Japan, whose supplies totalled 280,000 tons, followed by the U.S. and Australia.

 

The Turkish Iron and Steel Producers’ Association (TCUD) noted that the country’s scrap imports surged higher by 23% month-on-month to total 2.03 million tons in May 2021. The imports from the EU accounted for 56% of the total imports. The other key suppliers were the U.S. and UK. The cumulative imports during the initial five-month period of the current year edged higher almost one-third to total 10.83 million tons.

The South Korean scrap imports too recorded 10.8% growth over the previous year to total around 378,000 tons. The largest sources of import were Japan, the U.S. and Russia. However, the Jan-May ’21 imports, at nearly 1.69 million tons, registered year-on-year decline by almost 18%.

 

The imports of scrap by Taiwan totalled 310,000 tons, marginally higher by 6% from the prior month. The U.S., with supplies of roughly 126,000 tons, emerged as the primary source of import. In second place was Japan, which supplied around 67,000 tons. During the initial five-month period of the year, Taiwan imported 1.38 million tons of scrap, significantly down by 13% from the prior year.
