Sonoco Provided Key Update on Progress of Hartsville Conversion Project
The key component of the investment project is the construction of a new stock prep system capable of providing nearly 650 tons of recycled fiber per day.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco provided update on the progress of its $115 million Project Horizon at Hartsville, S.C. mill. The investment is aimed at transforming its its corrugated medium machine in Hartsville, S.C. to a state-of-the-art uncoated recycled paperboard operation. Upon completion of the project, the machine will have an annual production capacity of approximately 180,000 tons.

The key component of the investment project is the construction of a new stock prep system capable of providing nearly 650 tons of recycled fiber per day. The construction of the system is expected to get completed by October this year. It will boost consumption of lower-cost mixed paper, along with OCC. The project also includes construction of a new offline winding operation and 102,000-square foot finished goods warehouse. It plans to incorporate new state-of-the-art equipment in the offline winding section, which in turn will create nearly 16 new jobs.
The new Hartsville machine is being touted as the lowest cost URB machine in the world, capable of producing a wide range of high-value paper grades. Furthermore, it will ensure long-term viability of the Hartsville paper mill complex.
The conversion of #10 machine is expected to be completed by the end of second quarter next year.
