Steel Dynamics EAF Steel Mills to be Carbon Neutral by 2050

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) has set a goal, by which it aims its electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill operations to be carbon neutral by 2050. It has also declared interim emissions reduction and renewable energy targets for 2025 and 2030.

The company aims to achieve a 20% Scope 1 and Scope 2 combined greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity reduction across its EAF steel mills by 2025 and a 50% reduction by 2030. This is upon comparison with the 2018 baseline. Also, it plans to boost the renewable electrical energy consumption at its EAF steel mills to 10% by 2025 and 30% by 2030, said the company press release.

SDI will focus on identifying and implementing emission reduction projects, improving energy management, partnering with local utilities on increasing the use of renewable energy and exploring on development of innovative technologies.
