Coca-Cola Switches to 100% Recycled Plastic Bottles in the UK

This will prevent around 30 million drinks packs from being wrapped in plastic.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Beverages giant Coca-Cola has announced switch to 100% recycled plastic content in all 500 ml or less on-the-go bottles used across the UK. The move, expected to be in force from September this year, will lead to savings of approximately 29,000 tonnes of plastic per annum. Until now, the bottles contained only 50% recycled content.

The decision to have all bottles to be made of 100% recycled plastic is another step forward towards its target of using 100% recycled ore renewable plastic in all of its bottles. The company is in the process of transitioning from plastic shrink wrap to cardboard packaging for drinks multipacks. This will prevent around 30 million drinks packs from being wrapped in plastic.

The company is said to be working with the Scottish and Westminister governments on an innovative Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), which will encourage customers to recycle more, thus ensuring greater collection of bottles. These bottles will be used to make new ones, it said.

Meantime, Environment Minister Rebecca Pow stated that the initiatives by industry leaders such as Coca-Cola will help the administration in its efforts to crack down on plastic pollution.
