Top Chinese Steelmaker Reinforced Commitment to Cut Carbon Emissions

The HBIS Group is investigating a strict action plan to surpass the emissions reduction target declared by the Chinese administration.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Chinese steelmaker HBIS Group announced its commitment to lower its carbon emissions. The company, along with other steelmakers, is focused on reducing the industry’s environmental footprint. Incidentally, steel industry accounts for almost 7-9% of the total carbon emissions of the world, as per latest estimates provided by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

The HBIS Group is investigating a strict action plan to surpass the emissions reduction target declared by the Chinese administration. HBIS Group aims to achieve a peak in its carbon emissions by 2022, reduce it by 10% from that peak by 2025 and further reduce it by 30% from 2022 peak by 2030, before eventually reaching net-zero emissions goal by 2050, said Yu Yong, Chairman, HBIS Group Co., Ltd.

The first phase of the country’s first hydrogen DRI demonstration plant in HBIS XuanSteel, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei province is expected to complete by end of the current year. This will result in a capacity to produce 0.6 million tonnes of iron per annum using hydrogen. The second phase will further expand the site, thus increasing the capability by another 0.6 million tonnes of iron per annum through the electrolysis of water.

The refuelling station for hydrogen-powered trucks at the HBIS Tangsteel facility makes use of hydrogen from the coke ovens.
