SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Halden, Norway-based pulp and paper company Norske Skog announced its decision to close its Tasman newsprint mill in New Zealand. The company has decided to proceed with the sales of the mill assets. This is with reference to a stock exchange release dated 9th October, 2020.
According to the company, the mill’s production will cease effective 30th June, 2021. This will reduce the company’s total newsprint capacity by approximately 150,000 tonnes. The steady decline of the publication paper industry had forced the company to seek alternative options to run the mill. However, the Covid-19 impacts resulted in further setbacks, with the company finally reaching the decision to close the mill and sell its assets. The decision is likely to impact nearly 160 employees.
Commenting on the decision, Sven Ombudstvedt, CEO, Norske Skog said that the decision to close the Tasman mill follows a detailed review over the past eight months. The mill, a key contributor to New Zealand’s regional economy for the past 66 years, has produced more than 15 million tonnes of publication paper. He thanked everyone for their outstanding contributions over the years.
The closure of Tasman mill is unlikely to affect the company’s pellets production.
