Smurfit Kappa Paper Mill Announced Final Phase of Investment

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa- Europe’s leading corrugated packaging company announced significant investment at its Hoya paper mill in northwest Germany. The proposed €35 million investment is part of the investment programme initiated by the company in 2011. This will boost the mill’s production by approximately 70 kt to 450 kt per annum.

Smurfit Kappa plans to replace the complete press section of the PM2 paper machine with latest technology, which in turn will significantly improve the overall efficiency of the manufacturing process, thus strengthening the company’s overall containerboard system. The production speed of the machine is expected to increase to 1250 m/min. Also, it will reduce carbon emissions by almost 5,500 tons per annum. The upgraded PM2 paper machine will become fully operational by Q1 2023.

Commenting on the investment, Saverio Mayer, CEO, Smurfit Kappa Europe said that the investment marks the final phase of the decade-long investment process at the Hoya mill. It further testifies the company’s commitment to its German operations and its capacity to adapt to leading edge technologies, he added.

The Hoya paper mill and board manufacturing plant employs nearly 300 people.
