Plastics Industry Association Outlines Guidance for Recycled Plastic Food Packaging

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Plastics Industry Association announced publication of a new policy document, which outlines guidance for recycled plastic food packaging. The document has been prepared over a period of two years, with key inputs from association’s member companies. It is predicted to open supply chain collaboration for food-safe recycled materials
The guidance document is being released in order to ensure that packaging is made with postconsumer resin and that it complies with several U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations related to food-contact materials (FCM). The guidance document addresses various elements such as food contact status, microbiological contamination, kosher and halal compliance and nanotechnology.

The federal requirements for use of post-consumer recycled plastics in food-contact applications are extremely complex, noted George Southworth, senior director of the Plastics Industry Association Processors and Brand Owners Advisory Group. The guidance document provides clarity in understanding and writing compliance statements for recycled material in food packaging, he added.
