Alcoa to Supply Aluminum for Audi’s Electric Sports Car

Through this contract, Alcoa seems to be in an effort to ramp up the technology to a commercial scale.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Corporation announced plans to supply sustainable aluminium to German carmaker Audi. The aluminium will be used for the wheels of Audi’s new electric vehicle, the e-tron GT sports car. The new technology could help to reduce carbon emissions significantly.

According to company press release, Alcoa will supply aluminum to Ronal Group, which will use them in manufacturing high-performance alloy wheels for Audi e-tron GT. The aluminum is produced using a technology known as Elysis, which was licensed by the company in 2018. Through this contract, Alcoa seems to be in an effort to ramp up the technology to a commercial scale.

The traditional aluminum smelting process places carbon anode in a bath that contains alumina and other materials. It then uses a strong electrical current to produce aluminum. Alcoa’s revolutionary technology replaces carbon anode with a proprietary inert material. The process emits pure oxygen as a byproduct and eliminates all greenhouse gas emissions.

Tim Reyes, Alcoa’s Chief Commercial Officer and Executive Vice President stated that the partnership offers sustainable solutions to help make an innovative vehicle even more exciting for consumers.
