Plastics Pact Launches Action Plan to Eliminate Plastic Waste
More than 40 partners, representing diverse sections of the plastics value chain, have already joined the Pact.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Canada Plastics Pact (CPP), launched in end-January this year, announced various concrete actions to address pollution caused by plastic packaging waste. More than 40 partners, representing diverse sections of the plastics value chain, have already joined the Pact.
The initiative stands out from earlier such initiatives, because it targets not just to conduct studies and talk about plans to reduce plastic waste, but also takes industry-wide action to eliminate plastic waste by developing a true, sustainable circular economy that would recycle all plastics and keep them in circulation for longer periods of time. It aims to bring together key players to tackle various issues, such as those pertaining to production of plastic packaging and limitations of existing recycling infrastructure and end markets to prevent plastics from ending up in landfills.

As per rough estimates, nearly 3 million tons of plastics are produced every year in Canada, whereas only about 8% to 10% of that actually gets recycled and turned back into materials that get recirculated. The transformation into a circular system presents $8 billion opportunity for Canada’s GDP, said a recent study by Deloitte.
