Electronic Waste Dumping Spiked in Ireland During Early-2021
Furthermore, he urged people to gather up the items and take them to local recycling centres once the restrictions are lifted.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Ireland witnessed sudden spike in the volume of electronic scrap dumped in waste bins during the month of January this year. This resulted in 7% decline in electronics recycling during the month, when compared with the same month a year before. The recent 5 kilometre travel restriction is said to have resulted in the above situation.
According to WEEE Ireland, the volume of end-of-life electronics recycled at around 90 local recycling centres recorded 10% surge during the previous year. By number of appliances, the recycling increased by almost half-a-million small appliances.

Leo Donovan, CEO, WEEE Ireland said that 2020 had witnessed gradual improvement in the attitudes and behaviours of Irish people towards recycling of electronic waste. However, the travel restrictions resulted in reversal of this behaviour. He warned people of the serious environmental and health impacts due to dropping of discarded electronics in household bins. Furthermore, he urged people to gather up the items and take them to local recycling centres once the restrictions are lifted.
WEEE highlighted on the important role played by e-scrap recycling schemes, in order to help Ireland continue to comply with EU targets.
