Topmost Steel Producing Nations in January 2021

The second largest crude steel producer was India with estimated output of 10 Mt.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) published the list of top ten crude steel producers for the month of January 2021.

China was the leading producer, with an output of 90.2 million tonnes (Mt). The country led the Asian crude output surge, recording an increase of 6.8% from January 2020. When compared with the prior month, the Chinese output witnessed decline by 1.1 Mt. The second largest crude steel producer was India with estimated output of 10 Mt. The country’s output recorded year-on-year surge by 7.6%.

In third place was Japan, whose output recorded year-on-year decline by 3.9% to total 7.92 Mt during the opening month of the current year, worldsteel data said. The country recorded eleventh straight month of year-on-year decline in steel output. However, the month-on-month 5.3% surge in output signals that the country’s steel demand and output has started to recover steadily.

The other world countries to feature in the top-ten list include the U.S. (6.9 Mt), Russia (6.7 Mt), South Korea (6 Mt), Turkey (3.4 Mt), Germany (3.3 Mt), Brazil (3 Mt) and Iran (2.6 Mt).

The steel production by the 64 countries reporting to the association was 162.9 million tonnes (Mt) in January 2021, a 4.8% increase compared to January 2020.
