Firm Behind Controversial Gold Mine Faces Multiple Lawsuits

The first complaint was filed on Dec 4th, with Neil Darish, co-owner of McCarthy Lodge as the lead plaintiff.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Two lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court in New York against the company behind the controversial copper and gold mine in Southwest Alaska. The investors claimed that developer ‘The Pebble Limited Partnership’ and the parent company ‘Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd’ violated federal laws by hiding full details about the project.

The first complaint was filed on Dec 4^th, with Neil Darish, co-owner of McCarthy Lodge as the lead plaintiff. A similar lawsuit was filed in mid-December. Both of them alleged the company of making materially false and misleading statements. Furthermore, it alleged that they were reluctant to disclose that the project was actually much larger than proposed and that it was not in compliance with federal laws.

The project had earlier faced criticism from various environment groups. Also, Republican U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski too had condemned the project. A permit request by the company was denied by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in late November last year. However, Pebble Limited Partnership claimed that the rejection was purely political and that it would appeal that decision.

The company declined to comment on the pending litigation.
