AISI Published Nov '20 Steel Import Permit Statistics

When compared with October 2020 final imports of 1.509 million net tons, the November 2020 steel import permit tonnage was down by 6.7%, AISI data said.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals substantial decline in steel import permit applications in the month of November this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 1.408 million net tons in November 2020. This is significantly down by approximately 17% when matched with 1.699 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with October 2020 final imports of 1.509 million net tons, the November 2020 steel import permit tonnage was down by 6.7%, AISI data said.

In November, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.267 million net tons, edging higher marginally by 1.4% from the final imports total of 1.250 million net tons in October. Tin plates reported the largest increase in November permits over the prior month, surging higher by 86%. The import permits for electrolytic galvanized sheets/strips and plates in coils too were up by 83% and 49% respectively.

In November, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial eleven-month period of the year were South Korea, Japan and Germany.
