U.S. Steel Shipments Witnessed Notable Decline

The AISI data indicates that year-to-date steel shipments totalled 60.449 million net tons in 2020.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly steel shipment data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable decline during the month of September this year compared with the same month a year before. However, the shipments recorded marginal increase over the prior month. The year-to-date shipments by mills too were down significantly over 2019.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 6.663 million net tons in September this year. This is down by 14.2% from the shipments of 7.767 million net tons in September 2019. The shipments during the month recorded 2.0% increase from the prior month. It must be noted that the August 2020 shipments had totalled 6.533 million net tons.

The AISI data indicates that year-to-date steel shipments totalled 60.449 million net tons in 2020. This is substantially lower by 16.7% when matched with those during the corresponding period in 2019. The shipments had totalled 72.578 million net tons during January to September in 2019.

The report provides month-on-month comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products. The shipments of hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip increased marginally by 2% from the previous month. The shipments of hot rolled sheet were down by 1%, whereas the cold rolled sheet shipments remained unchanged over the month.
