ACC and The Recycling Partnership Supports Packaging Fee to Boost Recycling
The fees could be managed at the state or federal level, said the policy document titled ‘Accelerating Recycling’.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Two major industry groups have extended their support towards introduction of packaging fees on product makers in order to support development of recycling infrastructure.
The Recycling Partnership recently released a policy document that outlines the proposal that the fees paid by brands and packaging producers must be utilized towards enhancing residential recycling infrastructure and creating awareness and offering education about the need for boosting recycling. It also proposes a per-ton disposal fee, in addition to the tip fees, at landfills, incinerators and WTE plants, which would be used by the local government for recycling programs. The fees could be managed at the state or federal level, said the policy document titled ‘Accelerating Recycling’.

Also, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) released a document, outlining support for packaging fees as well as disposal fees so as to provide a balance between costs associated with disposal and recycling. In order to achieve recycling goals, ongoing and expanded cooperation among plastic producers, manufacturers and brands is required, said Chris Jahn, President and CEO, ACC.
The recycling sector as well as lawmakers has commended the leading industry bodies for extending support to packaging fees.
