Steel Output Witnessed Decline in South America

The leading regional steel producer in August this year was Brazil.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests marginal decline in crude steel output by South American countries during the month of August this year. All countries except Brazil recorded reduced output during the month.

The South American output totalled 3.301 million tonnes (Mt) during August 2020, as compared with the output of 3.359 Mt in the same month last year. The year-to-date production was down considerably by 15.2% at 24.169 Mt until August 2020. The Jan-Aug ‘19 cumulative output had totalled 28.490 Mt.

The leading regional steel producer in August this year was Brazil. The Brazilian output totalled 2.701 Mt, accounting for approximately 82% of the total regional crude steel output. The output by the country witnessed 6.5% surge when compared with the previous year. Argentina recorded an output of 336,000 tonnes, down by nearly 23% from Aug ‘19 output of 436,000 tonnes. In third place was Colombia with an output totalling 110,000 tonnes. The other key producers were Chile (85,000 tonnes) and Peru (40,000 tonnes).

The Venezuelan crude steel production declined significantly by 76.6% when matched with the previous year. The output by Uruguay too was down by nearly 63%. Paraguay recorded approximately 70% decline in output during the month.
