Africa Crude Steel Output Posted Notable Dip

The region had reported a total production of 873,000 tonnes in August 2019.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African crude steel production recorded substantial decline during the month of August this year, triggered by production declines in major producing countries including Libya and South Africa. However, the largest producer, Egypt, recorded increased output over the previous year. The regional output during the initial eight months of the current year too was down considerably.

The monthly crude steel production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that African production totalled 775,000 tonnes, falling significantly by 11.2% from the previous year. The region had reported a total production of 873,000 tonnes in August 2019.

Egypt continued to remain as the largest steel producer in the region, with an estimated output of 415,000 tonnes of crude steel. The country accounted nearly 54% of the total regional production. The country’s monthly steel output has increased marginally by 1.7%, upon comparison with the same month a year before. The second largest producer- South Africa reported 24% year-on-year decline from 434,000 tonnes to 330,000 tonnes. Meantime, the Libyan output posted 3.7% year-on-year decline.

The cumulative steel production by the African countries during the initial eight months of 2020 totalled 7.674 Mt, down by approximately 19% upon comparison with the output of 9.426 Mt during Jan-Aug ‘19.
