CMC to Build New Micro Mill Near Its Mesa, Arizona Plant
The new merchant bar quality (MBQ) micromill, called Triple M, will be constructed at an expense of nearly $300 million.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Irving, Texas-headquartered Commercial Metals Company (CMC) announced its plans to build a new micro mill. The company’s third micro mill will be located in Mesa, Arizona. The project now awaits necessary permitting and regulatory approvals. Simultaneously, it has also decided to sell its Southern California rebar facility.
The new merchant bar quality (MBQ) micromill, called Triple M, will be constructed at an expense of nearly $300 million, creating approximately 185 jobs. The facility, with a nominal capacity of 500,000 short tons per year, is scheduled to begin operations in early-2023. Out of the total capacity, 150,000 short tons is expected for merchant products. The new facility is expected to generate $50 million in incremental EBITDA.
According to the company press release, the mill would be the first facility to employ continuous production process. The production from the mill will cater to rebar and merchant bar products demand from west coast region. The location of the mill, adjacent to CMC’s existing facility, will help the company to leverage its existing infrastructure and personnel expertise.
Tracy Porter, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer noted that it has entered into agreement with equipment provider Danieli to equip the mill with the latest technology in EAF power supply systems.
