New Aluminum Castings Furnace to Be Fully Operational in August

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hubbard, Ohio-headquartered Ellwood Engineered Castings announced that it plans to start up the new aluminum castings furnace in the month of August this year. The company had announced expansion into aluminum castings sector in September 2018. The expansion will help the company to diversify its traditional iron foundry business portfolio.
According to Jeff Nicol, Ellwood’s vice president of technical sales, the facility will bring in prime aluminum and secondary alumionum scrap which will be used as raw materials. The metals will be purchased and stored in as segregation fashion, whichj will later be moved to a large bin and then to the pre-melt furnaces.
The two pre-melt furnaces will help in drying any amount of moisture, if present in the feedstock, before they are finally fed into the melting furnace. In a later stage, it will be treated with argon to remove hydrogen and other impurities. It finally reaches the castings table, where they are melted into ingots, after passing through a ceramic filtration system. The aluminum products from the furnace will be primarily supplied to automobile and aerospace industry.
The $52 million investment is expected to create more than 30 jobs at the foundry. The company also hinted at a potential second phase expansion of the project, whereby it plans to add a second production furnace.
