J.D. Irving Kicks Off $35M Expansion at Doaktown Sawmill
The project will expand the mill’s footprint by approximately $14,000 square feet.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The sawmills division of NB-based J.D. Irving, Limited announced plans to begin the earlier announced expansion and modernization works at the Doaktown, NB sawmill. The company plans to make an investment of around $35 million towards the project, which has finally been scheduled to begin in the month of July this year, said a news release.
The project will expand the mill’s footprint by approximately $14,000 square feet. It aims to bring together the saw mill, planer mill and value-added center all under one single roof. It must be noted that the saw mill is currently located at the opposite side of the road. As part of the project, the entire lumber production process will be modernized by way of installation of state-of-the-art technologies and equipment.
The project is estimated to employ a team comprising of 60 members during peak construction and is expected to generate nearly 40,000 person hours of work. The commissioning and start-up of the expanded facility is scheduled to take place during spring 2021.
The expanded facility offers great opportunity for the Miramichi region to develop its forestry sector. Moreover, the investment brings in long-term security for Doaktown village and its communities.
