Expanded Electronics Recycling Pilot Aims to Double Collections

There will be no cost to consumers to recycle the additional products.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The expansion of the e-waste recycling pilot is expected to nearly double the collections, said the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) press release. The agency plans to purchase equipment and hire more staff to handle the anticipated rise in e-waste volumes.

The two-year pilot project approved by ARMA allows using reserve funds to recycle up to 24,600 tonnes of electronics products that were not accepted previously. It adds small home appliances, audio and video equipment, cell phones and other wireless devices, gaming equipment, toys, musical instruments, power tools and solar panels to the list of accepted items.

There will be no cost to consumers to recycle the additional products. Also, municipalities will receive funding for collecting the additional electronics, said the press release.

The expanded program is expected to make annual contribution of nearly $30 million to the provincial economy. Furthermore, it hopes to create additional 360 full-time jobs in the recycling sector. In addition, it will provide significant boost to the total quantity of recycled electronic waste in Alberta. The expanded program is expected to divert up to an additional 123,000 tonnes from landfills every year.

It must be noted that ARMA had recently hit a major recycling milestone of 10 million electronic products.
