Crude Steel Production Saw Drastic Decline in South America
The above five countries together accounted for over 98% of the total regional production in April 2020.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly crude steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) signalled drastic decline in output by the South American region.
The region produced 2.105 million tonnes (Mt) in April this year. This is substantially lower by 42.8% when compared with the prior year. The regional production had totalled 3.682 Mt in April 2019.
The single largest producer in the region was Brazil. The country produced 1.811 Mt of crude steel, accounting for more than 86% of the production by the entire region during the month. The Brazilian production witnessed a year-on-year decline of 39%, upon comparison with 2.970 Mt produced in April 2019. The second largest producer was Argentina, whose monthly production of 107,000 tonnes was almost 75% lower from the previous year. In third place was Colombia with 60,000 tonnes output. The other two primary producing countries were Chile (45,000 tonnes) and Peru (40,000 tonnes).

The region’s steel output tumbled by 16% in the initial four-month period of the year, from 14.433 Mt in 2019 to 12.125 Mt in 2020. The topmost steel producers were Brazil (9.954 Mt), Argentina (1.035 Mt) and Colombia (362,000 tonnes).
