SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canfor Corporation announced its decision to close the Isle Pierre sawmill, located near Prince George, British Columbia. The complete closure is expected by Q3 this year. The company blamed insufficient supply of economically viable timber as well as economic downturn on account of Covid-19 pandemic as the reasons for the closure.
Announcing the decision, Don Kayne, President and CEO noted that the decision, though a difficult one, was inevitable due to economic devastation caused by the pandemic. He admitted that the closure is sure to have long-lasting impacts on its employees, contractors and their communities. The company will ensure maximum possible redeployment of affected employees to its other facilities, he added.
