India Emerged as the Largest Importer of U.S. Aluminum Scrap
The primary importer of aluminum scrap from the U.S. was India.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent trade statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that exports of aluminum scrap recorded modest decline during the initial two months of 2020. The total exports were valued at $341.83 million during this period, down by almost 2.43% when matched with the exports during the corresponding two-month period in 2019. The U.S. aluminium scrap exports had totalled $350.36 million in Jan-Feb ’19.
The primary importer of aluminum scrap from the U.S. was India. The value of exports to India totalled $71.01 million. The trade volumes witnessed nearly 65% surge from the previous year. In second place was South Korea, whose imports from the U.S. were valued at $63.66 million. The South Korean imports registered almost 32% year-on-year increase. The third largest export destination was Malaysia, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $48.14 million. The other key export markets were Mexico ($28.45 million) and Canada ($24.1 million).

The U.S. imported $110.06 million worth of aluminum scrap during Jan-Feb ‘20. This compares with $139.41 million during the comparable period in 2019, suggesting a decline of more than 21% year-on-year. The top five sources of import were Canada ($77.37 million), Mexico ($26.94 million), Guatemala ($791,030), the UK ($605,224) and South Korea ($572,313).
