Paperboard Scrap Exports Witnessed Notable Decline
The U.S. paper and paperboard scrap imports were valued at $9.72 million in Jan-Feb ‘20.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau suggests substantial decline in exports of paper and paperboard scrap by the country from January to February this year. The exports declined by approximately 32% during this period. Meantime, the imports of the material too were down sharply by nearly 52% when compared with the corresponding two months in 2019.
The exports totalled $358.42 million in Jan-Feb ‘20 as compared with $523.4 million a year before. The top export destination was China, accounting for over 30% of total U.S. shipments. However, the exports to China dropped by nearly 40% year-on-year. China’s paperboard scrap imports were valued at $109.67 million. The other key importers were India ($74.32 million), Mexico ($36.42 million), South Korea ($20.82 million) and Taiwan ($18.63 million). Almost 72.5% of all exports by the U.S were to the above five countries. The combined exports to the above top five foreign markets were valued at $259.85 million out of the total $358.42 million.
The U.S. paper and paperboard scrap imports were valued at $9.72 million in Jan-Feb ‘20. The imports recorded sharp decline by nearly 52% from the previous year. The imports had totalled $20.14 million during the similar two-month period last year. The largest source of import was Canada, which supplied $9.23 million worth of paper and paperboard scrap to the U.S. The other key sources of import were Mexico ($467,539) and China ($20,120).
