U.S. Steel Mill Capability Utilization Recorded Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest report published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests significant surge in U.S. steel mill capability utilization rate during the week ended January 18, 2020.
The steel mill capability utilization rate during the current week was 82.7%. This compares with the rate of 80.4% during the corresponding week last year and 82.5% during the week prior to this.
The raw steel production during the week ended January 18, 2020 totalled 1.928 million net tons. Out of this, Southern region accounted for weekly production of 730,000 net tons of raw steel, accounting for almost 38% of the total U.S. weekly output. The production by the other regions (in thousand net tons) was as follows: Greta Lakes (686), North East (216), Midwest (208) and Western (88).

The weekly production was up marginally by 3.0% from the previous year and by 0.3% upon comparison with the prior week.
The adjusted year-to-date production through January 18, 2020 totalled 4.936 million net tons, whereas the capacity utilization rate averaged at 82.3%. The production stood marginally higher by 2.6% when compared with 4.812 million net tons of production recorded during the corresponding period in 2019.
