ISRI Issues Alert on Indonesia’s Restrictions on Recovered Fiber Imports

The technical discussions with the Indonesian government will continue, ISRI noted.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has alerted its members about Indonesia’s tough restrictions on standards to be followed in imports of recovered fiber into the country.

The Indonesian administration had introduced tighter pre-shipment inspection requirements in the month of June this year, proposing stricter limit of 0.5% or less for contamination. Later during the month, the government announced that it plans to use the ISRI specifications for recovered paper, which will set a standard of 1 to 2 percent for prohibitives and 3 to 4 percent for outhrows. However, there has been no clarity on the issue so far.

The ISRI notes that the Indonesian government has instructed pre-shipment inspection companies to follow 0.5% prohibitive tolerance, although an official government announcement has not been made yet. According to ISRI, the pre-shipment inspection companies have already started informing their customers about the proposed tough import standards. The technical discussions with the Indonesian government will continue, ISRI noted.
