Stora Enso Becomes Part of Ellen MacArthur Foundation Initiative to Fight Plastic Pollution

As part of this effort, the company will partner with customers and suppliers in developing environment-friendly solutions to replace plastic packaging.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso- the Helsinki, Finland-headquartered manufacturer of pulp, paper and other forest products has announced that it has joined the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment- a collaboration of businesses, governments and other organizations focused on addressing the impacts of plastics by eliminating plastic waste and pollution at source.

According to company officials, the signing of the commitment is another major step to address the global plastics pollution by providing renewable alternatives. As part of this effort, the company will partner with customers and suppliers in developing environment-friendly solutions to replace plastic packaging. Stora Enso will focus on development of alternative products based on wood fibres.

Recently, Stora Enso had partnered with AR Packaging in developing a new gas-tight pressed board tray packaging for chilled foods, aimed at reducing plastics in chilled food packaging. The new recyclable tray is made of renewable material content and is considered as an eco-friendly alternative to existing packaging solutions. It must be noted that chilled food products packaging segment is dominated by plastics, so far.

The New Plastics Economy initiative, led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, brings together key stakeholders to rethink and redesign the future of plastics, starting with packaging.
